Why Does Your Kid Keep Getting Sick? The Spine Connection Nobody's Talking About

Let me ask you something. Does your child seem to catch every cold that comes through the classroom? Constant ear infections? Headaches that show up out of nowhere? Maybe trouble focusing, or a stretch of bedwetting well past the age you expected it to stop? You've probably run through the usual suspects with your pediatrician — diet, sleep, screen time, allergies. All worth checking. But there's a piece of this puzzle that almost never comes up, and it might be sitting right at the base of your child's skull.

Why do I care so much about this particular topic? 

I was the sick kid. Growing up, I caught something four times a year, minimum — runny nose, chest congestion, a cough that wouldn't quit no matter what we tried. My family got so desperate we pulled our wood stove out of the house because we thought the smoke was making me sick. It wasn't the wood stove. Then came the bladder infections. Constant bathroom trips. Any time the weather shifted, I'd crash. By a certain point, I just decided that was who I was. I was the kid who got sick.

Then eighth grade happened, and I had a migraine episode that scared everyone in the room. My vision was flashing, parts of my body went numb, and I had trouble getting words out. I ended up sitting in the school office, and the secretary looked at me and said something I've never forgotten: "Maybe you've got a pinched nerve. You should see a chiropractor." That offhand comment sent me for my first spinal evaluation.

And the migraines stopped. I stopped getting sick as often. My body finally caught a break. I didn't understand the mechanics of it back then — I just knew something had changed.

That experience is a big part of why I now look at children's health through the lens of the spine, and specifically the neck. So let's talk about why that matters more than most parents realize.

The piece that's usually missing

When we talk about raising healthy kids, the standard advice is solid: feed them well, get them enough sleep, let them run around outside and burn off energy. All true, all important. But there's another factor that almost never makes the list, and it's the alignment of a child's growing spine.

Here's why that matters so much during childhood specifically. Kids' spines are developing fast. The bones are still forming. Growth plates are wide open. Ligaments are flexible in a way they'll never be again. And the nervous system is wiring itself at a pace that's honestly hard to wrap your head around. When that system has to function under tension — say, because the neck has lost its natural curve or the head is sitting forward of where it should — it doesn't always announce itself as "neck problem." Instead, it can show up as things that seem completely unrelated: headaches, recurring ear infections, breathing issues, even shifts in focus or behavior.

What the research is showing

A 2022 review in the Journal of Contemporary Chiropractic pulled together eleven pediatric case reports involving kids ages five to thirteen. Every one of them received structured, posture-based spinal care using an approach designed to restore the spine's natural curves — you'll sometimes hear this called Chiropractic BioPhysics, or CBP, in the research literature. This wasn't a quick adjustment and out the door. Care plans included specific spinal traction, mirror-image postural exercises, and consistent follow-through at home, all aimed at rebuilding the gentle forward curve that's supposed to exist in a healthy neck — what's called the cervical lordosis.

Across those eleven kids, the average care plan ran about thirty-four visits over roughly four and a half months. Follow-up X-rays showed something significant: an average twenty-five degree improvement in the neck curve, along with measurable reductions in forward head posture. That's real, structural change you can see on an image, not a subjective impression.

But here's the part that actually matters to a parent reading this: the symptoms changed too. These case reports documented fewer headaches, less neck pain, and improvement in things like asthma, ADHD-related concerns, dizziness, ear infections, and even bedwetting. Now, I want to be straightforward with you — these are case reports, not large randomized trials, so we have to be careful not to overstate what they prove. But when you see that same pattern repeating across different kids with different presenting complaints, it's worth paying attention to.

There's another published case that helps connect the dots even further: a ten-year-old boy developed chronic headaches and severe neck pain after a minor fall. His story followed a similar arc — postural correction of the neck, and resolution of symptoms that had nothing to do with his neck on the surface.

Why kids respond differently than adults

Here's something worth sitting with. A child's spine is far more adaptable than an adult's. The tissue remodels faster. Ligaments and bone respond to correction more readily. That means catching a postural problem early is generally a lot easier than trying to unwind decades of compensation once someone's in their forties or fifties. This is a window that closes gradually as kids get older, which is exactly why I think it deserves more attention while they're young.

And unfortunately, the conditions that create forward head posture are showing up in younger and younger kids. Think about what a typical week looks like for most children now — hours hunched over a phone or tablet, heavy backpacks slung over one shoulder, long stretches sitting at a desk, repetitive positions in a single sport played year-round. When that neck curve flattens out under all of that load, it can place abnormal tension on the spinal cord and the nerve roots branching off of it. It can change muscle tone. It can alter exactly how the head balances over the rest of the body. And that can ripple outward into balance, breathing mechanics, and even how sensitive the nervous system is to pain.

Why this gets missed at the pediatrician's office

Most pediatric visits simply don't include a look at spinal alignment as a matter of routine. Think about the last well-child visit you sat through — height, weight, a look in the ears, a listen to the heart and lungs, maybe a quick vision check. All of that matters. But nobody's standing your child up against a wall to see where their head sits relative to their shoulders. If your child gets an X-ray for something unrelated, the radiology report is typically focused on ruling out fractures or obvious pathology. A subtle postural shift in the neck curve isn't something that gets flagged unless someone is specifically looking for it. It's not that anyone's doing anything wrong — it's just not part of the standard checklist, and most providers simply weren't trained to look for it in the first place.

This is part of why so many parents feel like they're bouncing between specialists without getting anywhere. You mention the headaches to one doctor, the ear infections to another, and the posture to nobody because it doesn't seem urgent enough to bring up. Nobody's connecting those dots because nobody's looking at the spine as the common thread. That's not a knock on any individual provider — it's just a gap in how most of the system is set up to look at a growing child.

What to actually watch for

None of the following automatically means your child has a spinal problem. But if you're noticing a few of these together, it's worth a closer look:

Persistent or recurring headaches. Forward head posture when your child is standing still or looking down at a device. One shoulder that's consistently higher than the other, or a head that tilts the same direction in every photo. Ongoing ear infections, sinus congestion, or a pattern of mouth-breathing. Bedwetting that's continued well past the age you'd expect it to resolve, especially alongside other items on this list. Chronic neck or upper back complaints in an active kid — and I want to be clear, these are not automatically "growing pains" just because a child is still growing.

If several of these sound familiar, it may be worth having your child's spine evaluated by someone trained specifically in pediatric posture assessment and structural correction. I want to be careful here, because the goal isn't to turn every ache into a medical event or convince you your child is fragile. The goal is to catch problems while the spine is still moldable, before those compensations get baked in and become a lot harder to reverse.

A comparison that might make this click

Think about how we already handle two other parts of a child's development. We don't wait until a teenager physically can't chew to deal with their teeth — we schedule regular dental checks, align the bite early, and teach brushing habits from the start. We screen vision in schools every single year, catching problems long before a kid tells us they can't see the board. Nobody questions either of those practices. Nobody accuses a dentist of overreacting when they catch a cavity early, and nobody tells a parent they're being paranoid for scheduling a vision screening. The spine deserves that same preventive mindset, and right now, it mostly doesn't get it — not because it matters less, but because it's simply not on most people's radar the way teeth and eyes are.

I'd also add this: correcting a postural issue early tends to be far less involved than correcting it later. A young, adaptable spine responds to gentle, structured care over months. Wait until that same pattern has been reinforced for another fifteen or twenty years, and you're often looking at a longer, more complicated process just to make partial progress. That's not meant to scare you — it's meant to explain why "let's just watch it" isn't always the safest default when it comes to a growing spine.

Good posture in a child isn't just about standing up straight for a school photo. A well-aligned, healthy neck curve supports the nervous system, supports breathing, supports balance, and supports musculoskeletal health for years down the road. Catching alignment issues early doesn't just address whatever's bothering your child right now — it builds resilience that carries into adulthood.
